MorrowTab Release Notes

MorrowTab 1.0.9 adds Google Maps search for selected addresses. Calendar boards show the next two weeks from your Google and Outlook calendars, read-only, right on the new tab. The earlier release notes remain below. MorrowTab is available from Microsoft Edge Add-ons and the Chrome Web Store.

Added

  • Select an address on a webpage, right-click, and choose “Search this address on Google Maps” to open it in a new tab.
  • Open the changelog directly from the bottom of the Settings menu.
  • Right-click a webpage and choose “Save to MorrowTab” to pick a board and column in the familiar save dialog.
  • Fixed a startup error when an unpacked extension still has its previous permissions loaded. Reload the extension to enable the new menus.
  • Opening links no longer produces repeated click-count errors when Sync storage is full; navigation continues normally.
  • Zoom recording pages now show a download overlay automatically, with links that appear as the player loads. Right-click a recording link and choose “Save link as”. Zoom downloads are available only in the overlay; the extra right-click menu item has been removed. Close the overlay anytime and refresh the recording page to show it again. Keeping the links on Zoom fixes downloads that returned an HTML page from the separate window.

  • Day names, dates, empty-day messages and other calendar labels now have a subtle dark outline and shadow around the letters over photographs, so they stay clear even over bright or detailed scenery.

  • Removing a calendar now stops its pending download, so a late response cannot restore its cached events after removal. Undo still restores the subscription normally.
  • Oversized calendar downloads stop as soon as they exceed the size limit, keeping the last successfully loaded events available.

  • Events from a Google calendar open for editing in Google Calendar when you click them, in the agenda, week and month layouts alike, including meetings that reached that calendar as invitations from Outlook or Exchange. Outlook's published feeds do not carry what a link needs, so those rows stay as they are; the ↗ on the calendar's chip still opens Outlook.

  • Calendar boards. When you add a board you can now choose Calendar instead of Links. A calendar board shows your Google and Outlook calendars read-only on the new tab, built from up to ten calendars you subscribe to with their private iCal addresses: Google Calendar's Secret address in iCal format and Outlook's Publish a calendar link. Timed events show their times, all-day events appear on every day they cover, past events fade and the meeting in progress is highlighted. Nothing is ever written back to Google or Outlook.
  • Copy the address from shortcuts in the calendar editor and on the empty board open Google Calendar settings, Outlook for work or school, or Outlook.com in a new tab, right where the iCal address is handed out.
  • Each calendar gets a name and one of the eight accent colors, and the list syncs with the board, so your other computers show the same calendars once they are allowed to read those addresses. MorrowTab asks for that permission when you save a calendar, and offers Allow access on the board if a synced calendar arrives without it.
  • Three layouts: choose Agenda (today, tomorrow and the days ahead that have something on), Week or Month with the switch beneath the calendar chips, and page through weeks or months with Previous, Today and Next. The week view names its week number and the month view shows one beside every row. Click a chip to hide that calendar until you click it again. The layout and hidden calendars are remembered on the computer you made the choice on.
  • Every calendar chip ends in a small ↗ that opens that calendar in a new tab, where events are created and edited. While a calendar downloads, its dot spins in place without moving anything else, and a failed download is reported in a line beneath the chips, with the previously downloaded events kept on screen.
  • Calendars refresh on their own when a new tab opens, while a calendar board stays open, and on Refresh. Because Google and Outlook update these private addresses only every few hours, a change you just made can take that long to appear.
  • Manage calendars (from the board's Calendars… button) lists, edits and removes subscriptions, with the usual six-second Undo after a removal.
  • Manage board replaces the rename pencil in the board list. Its dialog still renames the board, and for a calendar board also chooses a 12-hour or 24-hour clock (or lets your browser language decide) and whether Week and Month use the full page width.
  • Settings → Appearance gains a Board picker choice: keep the dropdown, or show every board as a button side by side in the toolbar, with a Manage boards button at the end. The choice syncs with your other settings.

  • Over a photo background the calendar's surfaces are solid rather than glassy, so events stay readable in every layout.
  • Quick Save, the link editor's column list, Move to board… and column import offer links boards only; a calendar board has no columns to save into.

Fixed

  • Repair no longer disconnects another computer's first synced update because one of its checkpoint pieces is still arriving. MorrowTab now waits whether or not that computer has an older complete copy to use meanwhile.
  • If checkpoint pieces arrive before their matching pointer, MorrowTab now stays read-only instead of opening an older, incomplete copy as though it were current. Boards, columns, links and search engines return automatically when the remaining Sync item arrives.
  • When you confirm Repair for a checkpoint that is complete but permanently invalid, MorrowTab now removes all of that unusable checkpoint's Sync pieces, so the same recovery warning does not return. Still-arriving checkpoints are never removed this way.
  • Rearranging boards, columns, links or search engines now reaches another computer even when both computers independently started from the same earlier layout. An untouched baseline order can no longer override a real rearrangement.

New

  • A search engine can now be shown on exactly the boards you choose. Turning Visible on all boards off reveals a list of your boards to tick, instead of quietly limiting the engine to the board you created it on. Boards that already hold the maximum of 20 search engines are marked Full. An engine kept on a single board works exactly as before.
  • Settings is reorganised into Appearance, Links & search and Data & privacy, chosen from a list down the side, so one group of settings is on screen at a time instead of everything at once. On narrow windows the list becomes a row of buttons above the settings.
  • Manage search engines now lists all of them, not just the ones on the board you opened it from. The engines on the current board stay at the top and can be reordered; the rest are listed below and can still be edited or deleted, so a search engine is never stranded on a board you have to go looking for.

Fixed

  • Dropping a file onto the new-tab page no longer navigates away from it. Open dialogs, a half-typed search, and the tab's chosen search engine now survive an accidental drop. Dragging links, columns, boards and search engines to rearrange them is unchanged.
  • Links that close themselves after a set time are closed reliably again. When several such links came due together — after Open all links, for example — only one closed and the rest silently restarted their full countdown. Ordinary browsing in other tabs could also keep postponing a due tab indefinitely. MorrowTab now does far less background work as you browse.
  • Repairing inconsistent synced data no longer discards a still-arriving update from another computer when MorrowTab can temporarily use that computer's previous complete copy.
  • Exporting a column now keeps the order you arranged its links in. With Order links by most used switched on, exporting and re-importing a column previously replaced your manual order with the click-count order.
  • Adding a link with an http:// address no longer asks for site access that could never be granted. MorrowTab now says that page titles can only be fetched from https:// addresses.
  • The daily-quote setting is no longer announced twice by screen readers, and keyboard focus no longer stops on a hidden copy of that control in Settings.

Changed

  • Sync is stricter about the shape of data arriving from another computer. A malformed or tampered record is now refused outright rather than being applied to the page, and valid boards, columns and links are unaffected.

New

  • Computers can now download missing website icons through FixQuotes without opening every saved link first. Only the hostname is sent; each computer's icon cache stays outside Sync and backups. FixQuotes also stores reusable PNG copies in a shared server cache, reducing repeat requests to the same websites. Download website icons is on by default and can be switched off in Settings without deleting cached icons.
  • Each computer now keeps its own compact, validated Sync checkpoint instead of overwriting one shared copy. A laptop returning after days offline can merge its work without replacing newer boards and links from another computer.
  • Changes are merged by record and field. Editing different links or settings on different computers preserves both changes, while simultaneous edits to the same field resolve the same way everywhere and remain detectable.
  • Deletion is conflict-aware: a delete made after seeing an edit is respected, while an unseen edit made concurrently is kept instead of being silently destroyed.
  • If that concurrent edit belongs to a link whose column or board was deleted elsewhere, the retained owner chain is restored too, so the saved link cannot survive only as an orphan.
  • Concurrent link moves now resolve to one real destination column and its board. Open-mode and auto-close changes likewise cannot combine into a setting that no computer saved.

Changed

  • Column and board order no longer decides whether an item exists. A valid link or column keeps its declared owner even when an older computer sends a stale ordering list.
  • Existing valid data is upgraded automatically from Sync schema 1 to schema 2. Older MorrowTab versions become read-only after migration; update every computer to 1.0.2 before editing.
  • Empty, incomplete, corrupted or still-arriving Sync data stays read-only. It cannot publish the sample board or replace a partially delivered setup.
  • Backup files remain available as optional disaster recovery and point-in-time copies, but ordinary syncing between computers no longer depends on making or importing them regularly.
  • Sync checkpoints are compressed to fit the browser's extension-storage budget and validated before use. Compression is not encryption; synced content still follows the browser profile's normal extension-sync privacy model.
  • Each ordinary save uses one multi-key Sync write, while obsolete local checkpoint chunks are cleaned up after editing becomes idle. This avoids exhausting Chrome's rapid-write allowance during a normal burst of changes.
  • Even if no checkpoint or usable board can be recovered yet, the page stays read-only and still offers backup import plus validated local safety-copy restores instead of leaving recovery actions unreachable.
  • New users no longer land on a permanent-looking empty-Sync warning. The first-install welcome page now offers Start with sample board, which initializes before the board is revealed, and Use my synced boards, which waits without publishing sample data. Every starter path still performs the final locked empty-store check.
  • A required Choose how to begin chooser explains why Settings and editing are unavailable while the sample board is only a preview. New to MorrowTab comes first; use the sample board, check Sync, or import a backup. There is no close X, and Escape or an outside click cannot dismiss it. Cancelled imports return to the chooser; validation errors after Replace keep the retry confirmation available. Existing boards skip the chooser.
  • Daily nature photos now start enabled for new sample setups and their read-only previews. Turn the setting off to stop the public FixQuotes/Pexels background requests. Existing background choices are left unchanged.
  • Opening a synced Auto-close link on another computer now offers the needed permission on first use. Declining still opens the link normally, without an error warning or repeated automatic prompts. Choose Enable auto-close in the notice to try again for future openings.

  • Saved links can now use Auto-close after their MorrowTab-opened tab has been inactive for 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours.
  • Returning to a managed tab resets its full timer. Navigating to another site permanently disables automatic closing for that tab, and active, pinned, audible or loading tabs are never closed.
  • The feature is off for every link by default and requests the browser's optional navigation permission only when you first enable it.

  • The link editor now aligns labels and fields in two clear columns on wider screens, then stacks them naturally on smaller screens. Description is now a single-line field. The inactivity control is named Auto-close, with each choice stating the inactive time directly and its explanation appearing only after a timeout is selected.
  • Balanced the wide Settings layout into equal columns and aligned related actions in compact, equal-size groups.
  • Reserved indigo for selected states and primary actions. Upload, backup and import controls now use a neutral utility style, while maintenance actions stay quiet until hover or focus.
  • Standardized Settings text controls on a 40px height and aligned the right-column action controls.
  • Clear saved suggestions and Reset usage now appear only while their associated setting is enabled, without a redundant separator above the action.
  • Column cards now settle into a clearly darker hover state with a quick, smooth fade.
  • On a newly installed or long-offline computer, the sample board now stays read-only while existing boards may still be arriving. You can check Sync again or import a backup; starting a truly new synced setup requires a clear warning about overwriting an existing setup's board order and settings, plus one final check for arrived data.
  • If computers merge a valid board, column or link with an older ordering list, recovery now keeps the still-present item in its declared owner instead of treating it as deleted. Repair remains read-only until you confirm it; items whose owner is genuinely gone remain excluded.

New

  • Replaces the new tab in Chrome and Edge with a board of your own links: a board picker on the left, a search box in the middle, and columns of links below.
  • Up to 30 boards, each with its own columns, links, extra search engines and ordering. Switch from the picker or with Alt + 1–9, and the browser tab title shows the active board's name.
  • Every column carries a menu that can open all its links, rename the column, move it to another board, export it, give it an accent color, or delete it.
  • The link editor holds a web address, an optional name, an optional 200-character description, a destination column that can belong to any board, and a per-link Opens in override.
  • A Quick Save popup on the toolbar, titled Save to MorrowTab: it previews the current tab, lets you pick a board and column and edit the title, and saves that one page. The suggested shortcut Alt + Shift + S opens the same popup — it does not save in one press.
  • Quick Save can create a new Saved column as it saves, remembers the last destination on that computer, and warns once when the board already holds that address.
  • A starter board called Popular websites — 50 links in five columns (News, Streaming, Social media, Everyday tools and Shopping). It is drawn from a file inside the extension and is not written to sync until your first edit.
  • A welcome page on first install only. It introduces Quick Save, boards, search, rearranging and the quote modes, and never reappears after an update.
  • Deleting a link, a column or a board leaves a six-second Undo in the toast.
  • Drag a link in from another window to drop it straight onto a column, or paste an http(s) address anywhere on the page to open a prefilled add-link dialog.

Search

  • Browser default is permanently first in the engine picker and selected on every fresh tab. It submits through the provider your Chrome or Edge profile is already set to; MorrowTab never sets or replaces your default search engine.
  • Add your own engines from any HTTP(S) template containing {query}. Up to 80 engines, 20 per board.
  • Mark an engine Visible on all boards or keep it to a single board. Every board still keeps its own engine order.
  • Saved suggestions come from your own completed searches and nothing else — up to 50 per engine, offered once you have typed five characters, at most eight at a time, and stored on that computer only.
  • Settings can stop new suggestions being saved, and can clear the saved ones outright.
  • The placeholder reads Search with <name>, or Chat with <name> when the template points at chatgpt.com.
  • / or Ctrl + K focuses the search box; Alt + ↑ and Alt + ↓ cycle the board's engines.
  • Searches open in the current tab, or in a new one if you turn that on.

Organizing

  • Every new tab starts with the layout locked, so a stray drag cannot rearrange anything. The padlock unlocks it for that page alone, and a reload or a new tab starts locked again.
  • Alt plus the arrow keys moves columns and links without dragging, and each move is announced for screen readers.
  • Move a whole column, with its links, to another board in a single write — with Undo.
  • Export one column as a JSON file and import it onto another board. A column import is added alongside what is already there, with fresh identifiers and an Undo.
  • Order links by most used sorts each column by a per-link click count, and Reset usage clears those counts. Manual link reordering pauses while it is on.
  • Columns wrap onto a new row when another readable card no longer fits — there is no sideways strip and nothing slides off the edge of the screen.
  • A column of six or more links switches to a denser row style on its own.
  • Saving an address the board already holds warns inline and lets you keep both copies; it never blocks the save.

Appearance

  • Nine background choices, shared across every board: Auto, which follows your system between a plain white page and a dark surface, plus eight gradients — Purple, Blue, Green, Pink, Dark, Teal, Red and Violet.
  • Column spacing is Comfortable or Compact, and the board layout is either Capped cards, which keeps columns at a readable width and centers incomplete rows, or Fill each row, which lets them expand.
  • Eight accent colors for any column — blue, purple, yellow, amber, green, teal, red and gray — plus No color.
  • The FixQuotes Quote of the Day in four modes: Text (the default), Picture at the bottom, Picture at the top, and Off. Off hides it and makes no quote request at all.
  • An optional Daily Pexels nature background: one curated high-resolution photo a day, fetched through FixQuotes, cached on that computer, and always shown with its Photo by <name> on Pexels credit. It is off until you switch it on.
  • Or upload your own background image. It stays on that computer, never enters sync, and takes priority over the curated photo.
  • Link icons come from a brand library bundled inside the extension, then your browser's own icon store, then a two-letter badge. MorrowTab calls no outside icon service.

Your data

  • Boards, columns, links, search engines, the shared settings and the per-link click count are written to your browser's own extension sync, tied to the profile you are already signed into. There is no MorrowTab account and no MorrowTab server holding a copy.
  • Browser extension sync is not end-to-end encrypted, so board names, link titles, addresses and search templates should be treated as non-confidential.
  • Nine records stay on one computer and never sync: the selected board, the Quick Save destination, saved search suggestions and their on/off preference, an uploaded background, the cached nature photo, the cached quote, and two safety snapshots.
  • Export a plaintext JSON backup of everything synced. Importing one replaces all synced data after a confirmation, and keeps a restorable copy of what it replaced on that computer.
  • Ceilings enforced before anything is written: 30 boards, 120 columns (40 per board), 250 links (200 per column), 80 search engines (20 per board), 500 sync records and 100 KB in total. Settings shows a live Synced data: N of 100 KB · N of 250 links readout using the same arithmetic.
  • Every write is taken under a lock and compared against the exact data it was based on, so two open tabs cannot quietly overwrite each other.
  • If records from two computers ever merge inconsistently, MorrowTab opens a read-only recovery view where links and search still work, offers a diagnostic snapshot to download, and repairs nothing until you confirm it.
  • Three remote addresses, for two features you can switch off: fixquotes.com for the daily quote — which is on by default — and api.fixquotes.com plus images.pexels.com for the opt-in nature background. Those requests carry no cookies, no referrer and no query string; the Pexels image URL carries only the sizing parameters FixQuotes chose.
  • Fetch page titles when adding links is off by default. Turning it on still makes the browser ask your permission for each site before a page is read.
  • No analytics, no telemetry, no advertising tracker, no content scripts and no remote code.

Accessibility

  • The board picker, engine picker and quote setting are custom menus that work with the mouse, touch, the arrow keys, Home and End, and keyboard typeahead.
  • Every dialog keeps keyboard focus inside it and returns focus to the control that opened it.
  • Reordering is announced in full — for example Moved Research to position 3 of 5 — and a polite status region and an assertive alert region mirror the toasts.
  • Drag handles publish their own shortcuts through aria-keyshortcuts, so a keyboard user is told which keys move the thing they are holding.
  • The page stays usable at 200% browser zoom without gaining horizontal scrolling, and Settings stays inside the viewport with its content reachable. This is checked as an automated release gate.
  • Windows forced-colors mode is supported with real borders, selected states and visible focus rather than gradients and shadows, and prefers-reduced-motion collapses the animations.

Platform

  • A Manifest V3 extension for Chrome and Edge on Chromium 114 or newer. 114 is the floor because MorrowTab uses the Popover API for its menus, autocomplete and toasts, along with Web Locks, CSS :has() and color-mix().
  • Permissions are storage, favicon, search and activeTab, with standing host access limited to fixquotes.com, api.fixquotes.com and images.pexels.com.
  • The optional all-sites permission grants nothing at install. It is requested one origin at a time, only when page-title fetching is on and only for the site you just typed in.
  • No content scripts. The background service worker registers a single listener and does one thing: open the welcome page the first time the extension is installed.
  • The extension's own content security policy allows no remote script, and limits images to the extension itself, data: URLs, fixquotes.com and images.pexels.com.
  • Brand icons are a bundled subset of the MIT-licensed theSVG Color collection, converted to plain SVG files at build time. Product names and logos remain the trademarks of their owners, and their inclusion does not imply any endorsement.
